Guilty pleasures

This evening I decided to play it safe and run with Sven. I ran 8 miles, with the middle 4 at marathon pace. My middle 4 miles came in at 10:08, 10:09, 10:09, and 10:10. Bam, nailed it! Except all I had to do was set the treadmill speed and mindlessly run. Here are my feet on the treadmill. Hash tag proof and all that jazz. Except I’m not on Twitter. I am on Instagram, where hash tags are also used (or are they just called tags?), but chose not to give more than one branch of social media a picture of my feet this evening.

I look like I’m ten feet tall!

It was a run full of guilty pleasures. I started out listening to my iPod for the first 2.5 miles. Sven has an auxiliary plug, so I was able to plug my iPod right into the treadmill and listen to my music through the speakers. It sounded pretty good. I have a music confession. Right now I cannot get over the new Miley Cyrus song ‘Wrecking Ball’. I really like the chorus and I like running to it. Don’t get me wrong, I think the music video is distasteful. But the song… my new guilty pleasure.

And from there I moved on to my TV guilty pleasure: Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. Really, it’s just the show that gets me through until Dance Moms comes back on. But secretly I like it almost as much as Dance Moms.

The best part about guilty pleasures? They make the miles fly by while I run on the treadmill. I pinkie promise I never got the least bit bored during the entire 8 miles. Plus I’m killing two birds with one stone. I’m getting my miles in and cleaning out our DVR.

What are your music and TV guilty pleasures?

How do you fight boredom on the treadmill?

Well, it finally happened.

I cannot believe I am sharing this with you. But I guess if you’re reading this, I went through with it. Something happened last night that moved me to a new level of “real runner.” For the record, I don’t distinguish between a runner and a jogger or someone being a “real runner.” If you run, you’re a runner. That being said, I crossed into a new level of runner last night. You’ll understand in a minute. Don’t worry, there are no pictures.

Last night I had a pretty good 8 mile run. The weather was nice and cool (upper 50’s) and my legs felt alright. My pace was steady and everything was going well until about mile 1.5, when I suddenly had to go. Unfortunately, on this stretch of trail there is nowhere to go. You’re right next to a road and then you go by a water treatment facility. But I have a spot at mile 2 where I can safely drop trou without being arrested for indecent exposure. But last night I did not make it, and my running shorts were the casualty.

I was mad. It’s not like I was being stubborn and trying to make it to a brick and mortar bathroom, or even a porta potty. I just wanted to get somewhere that people driving on the road couldn’t see me. This is the first time this as ever happened to me. I’ve had some close calls in the past, but I’ve always been able to at least make a mad dash to a bush or tree. I guess it was bound to happen eventually if I ran long enough.

On a lighter note, once that awful incident was over the rest of my run went well. Around mile 4, something in the brush along the trail startled me (probably a deer). My automatic response when I get startled is to immediately clench both of my hands into fists. However, that doesn’t work out well when I have a handheld 20 oz water bottle in my right hand. And in this particular case my water bottle happened to be open, so I sprayed myself in the face. Messed shorts, sprayed in the face with my own water bottle…. definition of a good run, right?

The sun set with about 2.5 miles to go and I kicked it into high gear because I am scared of the dark and definitely do not want to be out on a trail by myself. High gear translated into a 9:46 last mile. In retrospect I’m not sure why it felt like I was sprinting.

I’m not even sure what questions to ask, because a lot of you are probably pretty uncomfortable at this point due to my over-sharing (sorry Dad). I hope I didn’t gross anyone out, but if I did I’m sorry. Come back tomorrow, I promise things will be back to my usual rambling randomness from my day.

I thought of a question! If you had an accident while running, would you tell your significant other?
I had to, because Barry had dinner on the table when I got home and I had to explain why I had to take a shower first.

Thunder Road Marathon Training – Week 14

Another week of training in the books. I ran all of my miles as planned, but I did not meet my goal of doing some cross training. I need to start mixing in some cross training on some of my rest days. I had to step away from cross training for a bit, as I adjusted to higher mileage, but I know it’s important to do more than just run. This week of training will include my first of two 20 mile long runs. Any tips on how to survive or encouragement would be much appreciated!

Monday- 7 miles at the high school track, including 8 x 800m. I went out too fast on the first two and felt like I spent the last 6 repeats hanging on for dear life. I think I definitely ran this a little harder than I should have, especially two days after my first-ever 16 miler. My legs were very sore afterwards, and my calves and left IT band were sore the rest of the week.

Tuesday- Rest day.

Wednesday- 7 mile run with Sven, with the 4 middle miles at marathon pace. It’s not hard to hit MP when all you have to do is set the speed and watch ‘Pitch Perfect’ while you do some vertical running.

Thursday- 7 mile run in the evening on the Dora and New River Trails. I moved this run from Friday to Thursday in an effort to let my legs rest before Saturday’s long run. It worked out for me last week. However, there wasn’t much good about the run itself. Little things were annoying me, it was insanely buggy outside, and my legs just felt tired. My calves were also pretty sore, and had been sore since Monday’s track workout. But I got it done, and the trails themselves were nice to look at with all of the changing leaves.

Friday- Rest day, and thank goodness because it was 80 degrees when I got home from work.

Saturday- First-ever 18 miler. This run got a post of it’s own. The short and sweet is things were good until they weren’t. As expected, I got more and more fatigued until I finally gave in to my first walk break at 15.5 miles. But it’s an accomplishment for me to make it that far before taking a break. This was the longest run I’ve ever done by 2 miles, and the first long run in awhile that I ran solo.

Sunday- Rest day.

Total miles: 39 (another weekly mileage PR)

This week’s schedule:
Monday: 8 miles
Tuesday: Rest/XT
Wednesday: 8 miles w/ 4 @ MP
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 8 miles
Saturday: 20 miles
Sunday: Rest

Marathon running

I only have one thing to share with you today, but it is worth your time! I came across this video on SR’s blog earlier this week. Even though I haven’t run a full marathon, yet, I still found it really funny:

The 8 stages of marathon running…. looking forward to it. I think I went through a few of those stages yesterday.

A few things to mention from yesterday’s run: I am proud to say that I did not chafe at all! I think I finally got that under control. I also did not get any blisters yesterday. I still need to figure out my coffee/caffeine issue, though. I can’t stomach coffee before a run, and I always get a bad caffeine headache post-long run, even though I drink coffee as soon as I get home. Maybe it’s just something I’ll have to deal with. On a happier note, I think I have my fueling figured out. A mix of Shot Bloks and PowerGel seems to do the trick.

I also feel the need to clarify that I was and am happy about yesterday’s run. I’m not sure why, but I think my recap post yesterday came across  as me being down about how things went. Yes, things got tough towards the end, but that was expected. And I shared how tough it was because if I didn’t that wouldn’t be honest. But don’t let that make you think I wasn’t happy with finishing 18 miles yesterday, because I was.

Now I have a question for all of you. Next week is my first of two 20 milers. Ice bath or no ice bath afterwards?

I survived.

I woke up this morning feeling sleepy after having a restless night of bad dreams (none of which I can actually remember) and having to get up twice to tend to Hank. Every once in awhile Hank will get itchy paws and he will lick them non-stop until they are raw. So we put socks on his feet to keep him from doing that. Well, even though we put deodorant on the socks to deter him from chewing through them, he still chewed through two last night. So I got woke up to the sound of him ripping them off and had to put new socks on. That resulted in me sleeping in an extra 30 minutes this morning, which meant I got out for my 18 mile long run a little later than planned.

I was on my own today. Barry is at work and Kim, my running buddy, had plans with her family. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. There are at least two good things about running solo: 1. You don’t have to worry when you leave the house 5 minutes later than planned; 2. If you crash and burn during your run, at least you’re not dragging someone else along with you.

I started out on the Dora Trail and connected up to the New River Trail. The first 6.5 miles of my run went really well. My legs felt good and I was in that happy “I love running” zone. At 6.5 miles I ate two Shot Bloks.

I hit a little bit of a rough patch during mile 7, but then I got back into a groove for miles 8-10 and even ran a few miles in the 10:30’s. A little bit past mile 10, I arrived at the New River trailhead, where I filled up my water bottle at a water spigot and had a Strawberry Banana-flavored Power Gel.

I started to feel pretty tired during miles 11-12, but I just focused on pushing through. I didn’t want to give in to a walk break, yet. You know you’re running too far when you get to 12 miles and have to use both hands to figure out how many miles are left. I can’t even fathom 26.2 miles right now. I would need both of my hands and either a friend or one of my feet to figure that one out

Miles 13-14.5 were even tougher, but I continued to fight, knowing I would be back at the truck at mile 14.5. That meant I could take a quick break to stretch and refill my water bottle. I ate two more Shot Bloks and grabbed my iPod so I could listen to some music for the final 4 miles.

During miles 15-16 I decided to run around town a bit. I was feeling very tired and ended up taking my first walk break at mile 15.5. I was proud of pushing that far before giving in to my first walk break. However, it really didn’t make me feel any better.

Mile 17-18 felt like the longest mile of my life. I had a moment of weakness and took my second walk break of the day at mile 17.2. But hey, 18 miles is the furthest I’ve ever run. I think taking just two walk breaks during the entire run (even though they were towards the end) is an accomplishment. The below comic pretty much describes my life from mile 17-18, except put 17 in place of 18.

The weather wasn’t bad today, but wasn’t exactly ideal either. It was 58 degrees at the start and 75 degrees by the time I finished my run. Not what you’d typically expect for October, but good practice in case it’s unseasonably warm this November in Charlotte. By default, I also practiced for Charlotte’s hills. My Garmin claims 3,396 total feet in elevation gain for today’s run. We’ll take that with a grain of salt, but I think it should be pretty good training, since the elevation chart for Charlotte indicates a total elevation gain of 1,168 feet.

Once I got home, I had to feed and water the chickens. Then I grabbed a quick shower and fixed some breakfast (scrambled eggs with salsa, yum!) before sitting down to watch the Hokies play the UNC Tarheels. It never felt so good to sit down on the couch! The Hokies won 27-17. That, combined with the goodness of the couch, made for a great afternoon.
