Marathon running

I only have one thing to share with you today, but it is worth your time! I came across this video on SR’s blog earlier this week. Even though I haven’t run a full marathon, yet, I still found it really funny:

The 8 stages of marathon running…. looking forward to it. I think I went through a few of those stages yesterday.

A few things to mention from yesterday’s run: I am proud to say that I did not chafe at all! I think I finally got that under control. I also did not get any blisters yesterday. I still need to figure out my coffee/caffeine issue, though. I can’t stomach coffee before a run, and I always get a bad caffeine headache post-long run, even though I drink coffee as soon as I get home. Maybe it’s just something I’ll have to deal with. On a happier note, I think I have my fueling figured out. A mix of Shot Bloks and PowerGel seems to do the trick.

I also feel the need to clarify that I was and am happy about yesterday’s run. I’m not sure why, but I think my recap post yesterday came across  as me being down about how things went. Yes, things got tough towards the end, but that was expected. And I shared how tough it was because if I didn’t that wouldn’t be honest. But don’t let that make you think I wasn’t happy with finishing 18 miles yesterday, because I was.

Now I have a question for all of you. Next week is my first of two 20 milers. Ice bath or no ice bath afterwards?

  1. I just watched that video on Hungry Runner Girl’s blog and I was thinking I needed to send it to you! I thought it was funny as well ๐Ÿ™‚ One day when I run a marathon maybe I’ll know them haha.

  2. You get a headache from not drinking coffee?!?! Oh no! That’s rough, especially if you can’t stomach coffee before a run. Does it help if you drink it earlier in the morning?Even if you WERE unhappy with yesterday’s run (which you obviously aren’t), there’s nothing wrong with that! Running isn’t 100% happiness 100% of the time. Also, the worst runs are good for character-building! 18 miles is nothing to sneeze at, fun or not.

    1. Yea, I am a caffeine addict and it stinks. Luckily all I need is my daily cup of coffee and I’m good to go. I have tried drinking it an hour before running and that didn’t work out. I don’t really want to have to get up that much earlier for a plain old training run.Good point on tough/bad runs! I just didn’t want to misrepresent my thoughts on the long run.

  3. Haha on that video. It is cute. I was gone for the weekend and I see it now in just about every blog post.Want to hear how smart I am? Just now when I came to your blog, I put two and two together (thinking of your post on the Hokies last week) and realized why your blog name is Turkey Runner! I guess I never really thought about it before but I am glad I figured it out!Way to go on finishing 18 miles!

    1. I had no idea it was going to pop up on every blog this weekend! I’m actually in the loop for once… go figure. Haha congrats on putting my blog name and my alma mater together ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s actually kind of a joke, so to speak, because the Hokie Bird is not really a turkey. The mascot name comes from an old school chant and it’s look was designed after a turkey, but it’s not actually a turkey.
