I’m linking up today with HoHo Runs and MissSippiPiddlin’ for their weekly wrap linkup, to recap last week’s workouts!
Monday- Rest.
Tuesday- 3 mile run in the evening after work. It was a perfect fall evening, and I couldn’t help but push it towards the end, which was fun! After taking it easy for a couple of weeks, my Achilles tendon is finally feeling back to normal after getting aggravated at the Virginia 10 Miler.
Wednesday- Cross training. I did a little bit of core stuff, and I also spent three hours cleaning the old sealant off of the flashing/metal edge seals for our camper repair. I’m counting it towards my workout since my arms were sore the next day!
Thursday- 3 mile easy run on “Sven” (my nickname for my treadmill 🙂 ). I rocked out to some music. Hank was sitting in the basement just staring at me, so I started doing little dance moves with my arms and singing to him a bit. This is the reaction I got:
Friday- Rest. Loaded up the camper and headed down to the campground in Fries for Saturday’s race.
Saturday- New River Trail 25K. I had a pretty good race, and ran a PR for the distance (although the previous 25K’s I have run involved a couple of mountains). I don’t feel like I ran my best race, but I felt good, the weather was good, and the scenery was beautiful. Full race recap coming either later this week or next week, whenever I find time to write it!
Sunday- Rest. Traveled home from Fries and then spent about an hour unloading the camper.
Do you run/workout with music? Do you ever go camping? Who else raced this past weekend? How did it go?
Very confused on what day it is. I was off work last Friday and Monday was a holiday. I’m definitely not complaining about the time away from work, but it really throws me off!
Enjoying this gorgeous fall weather. The leaves are changing and they’re almost at their peak, and it’s the perfect temperature for running! I need to get out on the trails and take it all in.
Still upholding my New Years resolution of flossing every day. I’m proud of that, since the year is over halfway through. Having a first ever cavity-turned first ever root canal is pretty good incentive!
Missing Annabelle, but also glad that she no longer resides in our backyard. Wednesday night and Thursday morning a bull decided to hang out right at our fence. If she had still been in our backyard, we probably would have had a bull in our backyard, too!
No longer in need of an inhaler! I had to start using one after a string of respiratory infections last winter. Luckily, I started needing it less and less as the summer went on and have not needed it at all recently.
Excited to head down to Fries, VA today for a weekend camping trip. A few days ago I didn’t know if we were going to be able to go, because we discovered a massive leak in our camper (after two weeks of heavy rain) and had to replace the entire frame of the front/bedroom area.
We are heading down there today will be running the New River Trail 25K tomorrow!
What do you currently have going on?
Who else is racing this weekend?
Do holidays throw you off?
I’m linking up today with Debbie over at DebRuns for her Wednesday Word weekly link up. Today’s word is adjust.
The definition of adjust, to change something in a minor way so that it works better, reminded me of this thing that happened recently. For once, I’m not going to talk about running. I’m going to share a story about something completely random, but something that most people can probably relate to.
I’m sure you’ve heard the term ‘brain fart’ where you’re trying to remember something very obvious that you should know, but it just won’t come to you. Well I had a major one of those not too long ago. I was looking at a recipe for country beef vegetable soup, and the first thing on the ingredients list was “3 cups of vegetable juice.” Makes sense for a vegetable soup recipe, right? But I sat there staring at that first item wondering what the heck that was and where I could find it. Did I need to literally juice a bunch of vegetables? Did I need to save the “juice” from canned vegetables? Honestly, I was completely stumped. Almost to the point of putting the recipe aside.
I continued to read through the rest of the recipe, and there weren’t any other ingredients that stumped me, so I returned to that first one. Seriously, what the heck did they mean by vegetable juice??? Maybe I could just adjust it and put something else in, instead.
I have a habit of catching on to TV shows late in the game. Usually, by the time I decide to start watching a show, it’s either several seasons in or it’s about to air its season finale.
In college, I did this with Lost (which follows the lives of plane crash survivors on a mysterious island). Barry and I started watching it while the last season was airing on TV. This was before Netflix and Hulu were popular, so ABC had all of the episodes from all of the seasons online. We would spend entire days binge watching this show. It also had the most disappointing series finale of any TV show I’ve ever watched. But that’s another post for another time (or never).
Last fall, it was The Walking Dead (about people surviving the zombie apocalypse). This show, at least, is still on. Before the start of season five, AMC aired the entire series up through season four. Barry and I recorded all of them and are now caught up with the show. The only problem with binge watching this one is that it gave us both funny dreams. Good thing we’re caught up with it, now, and only watch it one episode per week when it’s on.
And my newest obsession: Mad Men (a period drama about an advertising executive on Madison Ave. in NYC). This one takes the cake, as I managed to ignore the show’s existence until the week the series finale was going to air. Strangely enough, I didn’t know the series finale was airing in a week when I randomly decided to do a search on TV to see if there were any episodes I could record. As luck would have it, they were airing the entire series leading up to the series finale. Now we have 90 episodes of Mad Men on the DVR that we are slowly working through.
The show is really entertaining, but I live for the one liners. Being set in the 1960’s, a lot of them are demeaning towards women (i.e. The typewriter was built by a man, but don’t worry they made it easy enough for a woman to use; The women are brainstorming…. awww, I love it when they do that). This may anger some people, but I just take it lightly. It’s the way things used to be, there’s no changing that, and it makes for a funny aspect to the show.
Since we’re talking about TV, I also wanted to mention how much fun it was watching the FIFA Women’s World Cup in June and July. It was really exciting and even though I know it’s not possible, I wish it was going on all of the time. At least the World Cup was immediately followed by the Gold Cup!
Now I am really excited for the Summer Olympics in Rio next year!
Do you have the same habits as me with TV shows?
Do you watch any of these shows?
Who else is excited for the Olympics next summer?
Last week, I did something pretty crazy (for me). I drove down to Bristol Motor Speedway and stood in line to purchase tickets for next year’s ‘Battle at Bristol’ football game during their one day on-site sale. The game will take place between Virginia Tech and the University of Tennessee, on September 10, at the speedway. They are expecting more than 100,000 to fill the stadium for this game. If you’re getting tired of the football talk, bear with me because this isn’t so much about football as it is about the crazy things you do when you’re a fan of something.
I got up early last Friday, and was on the road to Bristol by 7:00 AM. What is usually a 2 hour drive took nearly 3 due to rain and traffic on the interstate. When I made it to the speedway I headed inside to join the very, very long line. People had gotten in line 24 hours prior to the sale, and there were over 1,000 in line already. It was raining heavily, but luckily we were able to line up inside the speedway under the stands, where the rain was more of a trickle. After about 30 minutes in line, I was handed a number by a speedway staff member. It was a bit disheartening, because it looked to be a long wait, but it did mean I was guaranteed tickets. Each household was allowed to purchase a maximum of four.
I made friends with those around me, most of which were Tennessee fans, and we began to pass the time. We chatted football, college, etc. and things weren’t so bad. I had considered bringing a camp chair in with me, but didn’t do so since initially the line was continuously inching forward. However, I did spend much of the time standing still.
After the first hour and a half, the wind picked up which made it significantly colder than it had been. But I was determined to wait as long as I needed to, as long as I was guaranteed tickets. After about three and a half hours, I was nearly halfway through the line. Someone with a Virginia Tech hat spotted me in line as they were leaving and told me that Tech had just made some tickets available for sale on their official ticket website. We shared the information with the Tennessee fans around me, but they weren’t interested since the tickets were going to be on the Tech side of the speedway.
Thank goodness for smartphones! I was able to get on the website and purchase my tickets before getting out of line. So after a three hour drive and a four hour wait in the rain and wind, I was able to purchase my tickets online. Right around the time I was purchasing my tickets, my in-laws (who live nearby) arrived at the speedway to see how things were going and see if I needed anything. They couldn’t believe I had been able to purchase them online after all of that!
Happy to be out of line after securing tickets.
Here’s the kicker: Prior to driving down to Bristol I had contacted the VT ticket office to make sure they were not going to do a public sale of their ticket allotment. I was told they were only available for season ticket holders. However, apparently that was only through October 1st, and the remaining tickets were made available to the public October 2 (the day of the on-site sale at Bristol). About an hour and a half after I purchased my tickets online there was an official email from the VT ticket office about the sale, and they all sold out later that night.
So it’s a bit of a bummer that I drove all the way down there to purchase tickets and then was able to get them online. But I got to visit with my in-laws for a few hours after leaving the speedway, and I got to eat Pals! Yum!
I always say I am a diehard Virginia Tech football fan, and I feel like I solidified that last week. Especially with the season we have been having this year. Honestly, it’s been a rough five years or so. But I still love my Hokies. In fact, we are playing NC State tonight and Barry and I have tickets! Maybe we will turn our season around. Get ’em Hokies!!
Have you ever stood in line for hours to get tickets for an event?
Would you ever spend the night in line to buy tickets?
