My first run in 5 days

Sorry for the silence over the past 2 days, I’ve been sick and I have not been running. My plan for this week was to do a track workout Tuesday and then do low key runs Wednesday and Thursday. But then I woke up with a bad sore throat Tuesday morning. When I got home from work that evening I was feeling awful and chose not to run. Wednesday morning I woke up feeling even worse and stayed home sick from work and also did not run. I have been catching a lot of colds lately- at least one per month for the past 3 months. I don’t know what’s up with that.

Today I’m feeling a bit better, so I went back to being a productive member of society (and by that I mean I went to work). After work I headed out for an easy 3 mile run. I actually debated whether or not to hit the track, since I hadn’t run since Saturday’s race (oh my gosh!). But a mile into my run I knew I had made the right decision. My legs felt fine, but my body was already out of energy. Not to mention I was not enjoying the pounding headache / 85 degree heat combination. It was hot enough that the cows, who happen to live across the road from the fainting goats, decided to hang with the ducks in the pond today.

I can only imagine how my head would have felt with my heart pounding while I ran 800m repeats at the track. I am hoping to do some sort of speed workout tomorrow, since Saturday will be a shorter long run because the Varmint 1/2 Marathon is next weekend.

Are you dealing with hot and humid weather this week?

Were you a productive member of society today?

Do you ever cool off in a pond like the cows were doing today?

  1. Hot and humid and waiting for the new AC to be installed next Tuesday. The old unit is just barely hanging on and isn’t doing much to cool it down.Productive? I’m not sure about that. But I did go to work today. Did you sleep soundly last night? Your welcome!LUD.

  2. Sorry you were sick. Being sick in hot weather is the worst! I like to think of chicken soup when I am sick, but not when it is hot. More like popsicles! Does applying to a bunch of jobs count as being a productive member of society?

    1. I agree- I’d much rather have a cold in the winter, if I have to be sick. Applying for a bunch of jobs is a step towards being a productive member of society 🙂

  3. Sorry you were sick! I tried some new vitamins and probiotics this winter that I think really helped keep colds away as I never got one. Hope you feel better soon!! It seems unfair to get sick in the heat doesn’t it!

    1. It’s definitely no fun to be sick when it’s hot outside. I started taking a multivitamin earlier this year. But now I have gotten sick the past 3 months in a row. Not sure what to make of that.

  4. I hope you feel better soon! It is soooo hot and humid up here, I just want it to be in the 70s! I don’t have to officially be a productive member until the 10th 🙂

  5. I am a spoiled pool brat, and a biologist. All I can think about when forced to swim in lakes and ponds is all of the potentially gut-twisting bacteria swimming around in them. [Yeah, I know, they’re in the pool, too – but at least the chlorine lets me THINK they might get killed!] Thus, my preferred cooling locations is, yep, you guessed it, a swimming pool. Booooooring! :)Colds in the heat = icky. Having recently been a victim myself, I’m with ya on that one. In fact, one afternoon, I said to KMN, “I just can’t. I’m going to go lie down in the air conditioned bedroom.” And that was that.I have only been a productive member of this apartment so far today. The sweeping and mopping are done, a load of laundry is set out to dry, and the bathrooms are my next target. They’re going down!

    1. All I can think about in lakes is snakes! I prefer the pool as well. I heard something random on the radio about Singapore this morning! They were doing a game called “fact or bull crap” and used this random true fact: it is illegal to possess or sell chewing gum in Singapore. They went on to explain that Singapore is really clean and they’re really strict about litter which is why chewing gum isn’t allowed.

    2. Hahaha. Hm. May have to fact check the radio, though – because these days, I think it’s legal to chew. It’s just illegal to sell, and VERY illegal to spit out anywhere but the garbage can. A bit strict? Yes. But the result is the cleanest public transportation system I’ve ever used. Immaculate!

  6. Ugh the weather!!! I had two final just easy/get your legs moving runs planned this week, but since the weather has been so hot, I decided it was probably better for me to stay inside, instead. Running in heat just DRAINS me…so even just a 3 mile run outside probably would have done more damage than good. I’m glad you are feeling better!! I’m being a “productive member of society” by going to work today, but my mind is still running 1000000 miles a minute thinking about my race tomorrow, if I packed everything, if I’m forgetting something, if I know how to get there, if my “crew” knows where to be and if I gave them a correct estimate of when I’m going to be there, etc. ha…so I don’t know if I will actually be “productive”…sorry, work. We run our race along a river…and we will just have to see if I don’t jump into it at some point along the course, ha. I packed extra socks, JUST IN CASE!

    1. Sounds like you made the right call staying out of the heat! I don’t know how you’re able to focus on work at all with your race tomorrow!! I hope it goes well and I can’t wait to read all about it. Good luck!!

  7. Sorry your head was pounding and that you were sick!! That’s no good at all.I like to walk out into the water to cool off, but I’m not much into staying there for any length of time. I cool off, get out, cool off, get out and then end up going inside if it’s too humid (thank GOD we live in Flagstaff!).

    1. That’s how I am at the beach, but mostly because I am afraid of sharks. I will go out in the water to cool off but I won’t spend much time there.

  8. Ugh, running with a pounding head just doesn’t sound good. It’s good that you took the time off. I hope you’re feeling better. We have a creek in our back yard and I’ve never waded in it. Duh! I’ve seen a few water snakes in it and although they are non-poisonous, they creep me out!

    1. Water snakes are the main thing that keep me out of most lakes and creeks! When I was a kid we had a creek near our house and I would play in it all the time, but that was mainly because I never saw any snakes. Plenty of crawfish, though.

What's on your mind?
