Thursday tempo run

Today is my 100th post! How about that!

This evening Barry and I headed to the Dora trail (the bike trail in town) for a 5 mile tempo run. I had a tough run today and struggled to hit a 9:04/mile average for the middle 3 miles. I think it is going to take some time for me to adjust to doing track work and a tempo run in the same week.

We had a lot of rain Sunday evening through yesterday and the low water bridge was underwater again. They had barricades blocking the trail, which is right where the 2 mile turn around is. So we turned around, finished the tempo part of the run at the car, and did our cool down mile around town.

At least the June issue of Running Times came today. I can wallow in self pity after today’s less than stellar run while I read my magazine ๐Ÿ™‚ I will be icing my shins at the same time because they are still really bugging me.

Happy pre-Friday! We have some exciting weekend plans involving boots, spurs, and 8 seconds being the longest 8 seconds of your life.

Any guesses what we’re doing this weekend!? I don’t think my hints were too mysterious ๐Ÿ˜‰

  1. I am really erratic with speed work. I haven’t been to the track workout in weeks. The end of the semester has been really busy!This weekend I think I might get a haircut. I’m definitely going to go on a long run, too. I’ll be looking forward to reading about your weekend ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. You are tough doing both a tempo run & speed work in the same week. I try to alternate, doing one one week and one the next. I’m sure your way will bring more speed, though! Your weekend sounds fun! Hee Haw!

Take it slow in integrating both kinds of workouts – keep one short (like maybe 2-3 tempo miles), and/or just do one a week every other or every third week, or keep your interval repetitions low for a bit. You body needs time to adapt to the extra stress, and it’s waaaaay better to do your workouts productively than be too tired to execute well (although it doesn’t quite sound like you’re at that stage yet!). Just be careful, and stay in tune with your body, if something starts tweaking! :)Weekend plans: Work, Eat, Run night trail race (Sat), Celebrate Mother’s Day.

    1. Thank you for the advice! I really like the idea of doing just one speed workout every third week. That’s kind of like a “cut back” week to recover. Sounds like a fun weekend to me!

  4. Weekend? May hit the other end of the Accotink and head to Springfield. Time to exercise Gary for a bit. Trip to see see Mom for Mothers Day.Hang on and enjoy those eight seconds.LUD.

  5. Happy 100th postday! AND thank you for mentioning that because today was my 97th! I wouldn’t even have thought of checking if you hadn’t mentioned it.Maybe you should change your tempo run to an easy run for a month or so until your body adjusts to the track workouts a little more. Just a thought…Are you going bull riding? ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Happy 100th post!! I think switching to tempo runs at first was uncomfortable. Like I could do it…but it was uncomfortable feeling. I always mentally wanted to stop, but also knew that my body could keep going. It took a few runs more for my mind to catch on and believe that I could do it.
