This evening I went for a 4 mile run on the roads around our house. I went for my run sans watch, which is a pretty big deal for me. I have absolutely no idea how long my run took and I don’t know the distance down to the hundredths like I usually do.
Usually if I decide to run without my Garmin, I still wear my Timex watch. But today I decided to be a “zen runner” (isn’t that what they called it in Spirit of the Marathon??). There were two times that I had to stop at intersections because of cars, and each time I reached down to stop my watch only to find nothing there. It made me laugh both times, and I bet the passing cars thought I was smiling because I got to stop during my run.
I also had two unplanned pick ups during my run today (sooo technically I ran fartleks today), when I got chased by a smallish brown dog. This house has a larger white dog that has a collar on for their invisible fence, but today I learned that the small dog does not wear one. It ran out into the road and proceeded to chase me down the road. Usually I can outrun small dogs without too much effort, but this guy was kind of fast. I had to pick it up on the way out and again on my way back to the house. On the way home I encountered him after coming up a big hill, which made things interesting.
When I filled out my running log for today’s run, it bothered me that the time box was just empty. I fixed this by putting “NT” for no time, which made me feel a tiny bit better at least.
Don’t mind my inability to remember that there are 30 days, not 31, in April. I don’t think today’s run was anything spectacular anyway. My legs were a bit sore and tired feeling and I was also tired. I was up in the middle of the night last night with a migraine, and that always makes me really tired the next day. I usually get them about once a month and each time I feel like I’m going to die. But once again, I survived.
I have something new and exciting (and scary) happening tomorrow! Stay tuned! And there are big things happening in the world of chicks… but you will have to wait until Sunday to hear about them 🙂
Do you ever go out running without a watch? Does it bother you?
Do you get migraines? What do you do for them?
Yes, and they almost always happen in the middle of the night. I take Excedrin and put ice packs on my head/neck.
Do you keep a running/workout log?

Over the last year, I started running with my phone which then keeps an electronic log on the interwebs. Before that, I NEVER ran with anything and I loved it. But it does not help me with getting faster. I’ll have a new Garmin soon and I am a bit afraid of getting addicted to the data. I think for easy or recovery days, it is good not to take a watch because then you are not tempted in any way to run faster. But that is just me…Ugh-sorry about your migraines. I never get them (knock on wood!).
I can’t wait to read about your thoughts on the Garmin! I’m sure you’ll do just fine, especially if you don’t take it on your easy days.
I lost my running watch a few years ago but never replaced it! When I run with Julie and Kelly they have their garmins. Though I usually know how far I go because I map it on mapmyrun first! Can’t wait to hear the big news!! 🙂
Lost your running watch!? Oh my, I would go crazy!
way to go with the ‘naked’ running! 🙂 i’m really OCD about times and distances too, but i tell people it’s a GOOD thing to go watchless on days that are meant to be easy. or for workouts when u’re stressing urself out too much…get back to just running cuz u love it. 🙂
Well I happen to be very good at running my easy days easy, even if I have my watch on 🙂 I’ve learned my lesson. But I can’t get over the OCD about distance.
I do believe we use the same freebie Runner’s World workout log… 🙂 Could it be?
If you have the one that comes with a Runner’s World subscription, then yes! I got hooked on them and continued to order them (I think they cost like $3 or something?) after I ran out of my freebies.
Such a perfect post 😉 I hope that means you’re joining the challenge!
It was ironic timing! I guess you can include me 🙂 But I’m not on twitter, so I don’t think I’ll be that active in the challenge.
I plan to run without my watch on Saturday with the Cruisers AND I promise not to ask anyone what pace we’re running, how long it took us, etc. I don’t know if I’ve ever run without a watch since I started running marathons!
Ohhh man! Hope it goes well! Don’t give into temptation 🙂
I’ve never had a migraine, but my sister gets them a lot. Hers have to do with her iron and b12 levels – she’s severely anemic. I think lots of foods can also be triggers, though. I only run a few times a month without my garmin. A lot of times when I run I don’t look at my watch, or I turn off the alerts and just run to run, but I still like to have a log of what I have done. The only log I keep is the one that Garmin Connect keeps for me, ha. The suspense is killing me. I’m terrible at waiting for surprises…I need to know NOWWW
I try not to look at my watch during long runs, especially if I know where my turn around is. I like hearing the beep each mile, though. Haha the suspense is over! Tonight’s post is up!!
I used to run w/out a watch all the time. I would use my time on my podcast to keep track and then map out my route when I got home. Now, I’m FIERCELY addicted to my Garmin. I need to run w/out my watch more.
I am, too! I just love to see EXACTLY how far I ran and what the pace was. I have also recently become addicted to seeing the elevation profile from my runs.
