Birthday Paddle Boarding

Sorry for my recent, unannounced radio silence! This past week I just did not have any desire to be on my laptop, so I took a little break. But I’m back today with a recap from last Sunday. After primarily focusing on running throughout the winter and spring, I was excited to spend time doing other activities. Last Sunday, Barry and I headed to Claytor Lake State Park so I could try something I’ve wanted to do for a long time: paddle boarding.

We got to the park in the afternoon and after some recent hot and humid weather, I was worried the overcast day with temp’s in the low 70’s would feel chilly. Especially if I fell in! But I was pleasantly surprised that it felt nice on the lake. The water wasn’t cold and paddling around kept me warm.

Barry is not really big on water-related activities, but I had some pull with him on this one. This trip was part of an early celebration for my 28th birthday, which is this Tuesday, since Barry had to work this weekend. So he reluctantly agreed to kayak while I tried paddle boarding. He had fun, despite the kayak being uncomfortable after awhile, and I think maybe in the future he might try paddle boarding with me. He was also hoping to see me fall in, but spoiler alert: I never did. 🙂

After a 5 minute crash course from the rental company, I was out on the water. Our reservations were for 2 hours and I spent nearly 40 minutes paddling on my knees to get the feel of it. Claytor Lake wasn’t exactly the best place for a beginner, as there is a lot of boat traffic and thus a lot of wake. So it took me awhile to feel comfortable enough to stand up.

The quietest part of the lake was back behind the marina, since the boat slips helped break up the waves from the main part of the lake. I paddled back and forth here for awhile and finally decided to stand up. Barry was ready to capture me falling in, but I somehow managed to stay on my feet. It felt so weird to stand up and I felt unbalanced and unstable. It definitely didn’t help that my legs were tired and sore from staying on my knees for so long!

Definitely not correct paddling form!
Definitely not correct paddling form!

I paddled while standing up for short periods of time before dropping back to my knees. But finally, I started to really feel comfortable and stayed standing up for the last 45 minutes or so. We even went out to the busier parts of the lake a few times and I had fun paddling through the little waves in the wake.

Paddling was fun and it was also a good workout! I found that, when using the correct form and mechanics, it’s a great workout for your core. It would definitely be a fun way to mix it up for some different types of cross training. I can’t wait to give it a try again!

After we finished playing at the lake, Barry and I stopped at a local pizza joint for an early dinner, and then some dessert from Dairy Queen. We were both hungry after a couple of hours paddling around the lake! All in all, a pretty fun birthday celebration.

  1. Happy Birthday (early)! Trying something new is so much fun1 And, I want to try SUP so much! My sister is visiting soon and I’d love to rent them while she’s here. I’m just afraid there won’t be enough time. I see others paddling while we are on the lake in the boat. I’m not sure I can handle a lot of boat traffic and waves. I’m very impressed you didn’t fall in. Thanks for linking, Meagan! (My birthday is in December.)

  2. Happy birthday! Darlene & I tried SUP last Sunday, too. I didn’t fall in, but it was far less than 2 hours — wow! That’s a long time! I gotta say it made me nervous & I didn’t get up & down — once I was up I was like a deer in the headlights. I do want to go again, but right now I can’t get out much. 😦

  3. I’m so glad you finally got to SUP! Barry is a trouper to kayak along with you even though it’s not his favorite thing to do. We definitely need to meet at Hungry Mother Lake sometime and SUP together!

    Happy early birthday!

  4. Happy birthday! The more I read about SUP, the more I want to try it. I’ve done surfing lessons and that’s a really good workout for your core. Hopefully I wouldn’t fall in as much as I did surfing.

  5. Happy birthday! I’m with Barry–I’m a total land animal and don’t like water! But I have to say that paddle boarding looks so cool! And I can see it being a great workout. If I could do it not on the water I would, ha ha!

  6. Happy Birthday!
The water does look a bit rough. You did great if you didn’t fall in 🙂
I want to try this soon.
The balance work of it, is great for you for sure:)
